The Christian faith is the good way, a journey with God that unfolds over a lifetime. Evening School is a place for you to deepen your understanding of God, and God’s work in the world. It offers courses to help you on the way, quality teaching grounded in Scripture, Christian theology, and pastoral wisdom. In this, the School follows the ancient paths of the Church: learning to follow and serve Christ with others for the good of the world.

Designed for every age and stage

Evening School is for adults of all ages, learning abilities, and church backgrounds—whether you’re new to faith or a life-long follower of Christ. The courses don’t presume prior learning: they aim to stretch, grow and encourage Christians across every walk of life.

Made with small groups in mind

We’ve designed Evening School to slot easily into the weekly rhythm of church small groups. Consider registering together with your small group, and making this a regular part of your year together.

Gospels: Matthew
with Sam Martin

The Gospel of Matthew, standing at the beginning of the New Testament canon, has always been treasured by the Church for its unique revealing of Jesus as Israel’s Messiah, the world’s true King, and ‘God with us.’ Matthew’s Gospel narrates an unfolding drama in which the restoring reign of God, the kingdom from heaven, is made present in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. In this class, we will give attention to the wider movement of the narrative, and the context of the Old Testament, seeing how Jesus is presented as the fulfilment of God’s promises. In seeking to read faithfully, our desire is to be formed as deep disciples of Jesus; ones who, enfolded in this story, become hearers and doers of the word.

Who is God?
with Nathan McLellan

In the class, Who is God?, we will consider the God of Christian faith who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each of the three evening sessions will focus on the work of the triune God, as well as a particular person of the Holy Trinity. Throughout the class, we will draw on biblical texts and the teachings of the first 500 years of the Church regarding the Trinity. This class is designed for those who wish to deepen their love for God and expand their biblical and theological understanding of the Trinity.

Praying with the Psalms
with John Dennison, Michelle Young, & Luke Fenwick

The psalms are known as the School for Prayer. Through reading and praying the psalms, we come to learn new and deeper ways of being with God, and of praying as the Church. In this class, you will discover how the psalms teach us prayer for all seasons and circumstances. Focussing on particular psalms, we will learn to take up the ancient prayers of God’s people and to pray in new ways ourselves. Whether you feel stuck in your prayer life, or simply desire to grow in prayer, this introduction to praying with the Psalms offers practical encouragement.

Take the full journey

The full Evening School curriculum includes nine courses, grouped into three streams: Bible, Doctrine, and Christian Living. The School runs every Autumn, Winter and Spring —you can join for one course, or make your way through all nine.

Bible Stream

The Bible is the wellspring of the Christian faith. On this learning path you will engage with three biblical books, one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. These courses will foster your enjoyment of Scripture, help you to understand the shape of the Bible as a whole, and strengthen your confidence in reading and opening Scripture with others.

Doctrine Stream

Christian doctrine invites us into a true and beautiful understanding of who God is and God’s work in the world. In the Doctrine stream, we will explore the Holy Trinity, the person and saving work of Jesus Christ, the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the identity and mission of the Church, and the renewal of all creation. These courses will anchor you in the Christian tradition, enhance your theological reading of Scripture, and provide guidance for your daily life.

Christian Living Stream

God intends our lives to be centred on Jesus Christ, drawing all that we need from him in the power of the Holy Spirit. Walking this path is an invitation to become “joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Romans 12:12). These courses will teach you to pray, to forgive, to resist evil, and to serve, drawing on the pastoral wisdom of the Church.
