Letters: Philippians (Bible)

Philippians is an astonishing letter. The Apostle Paul writes with affection, and yet he challenges the Philippians. Do we, and can we, have friendships that hold together affection and challenge? Paul writes from prison, and yet he writes with joy and of joy.  We habitually undergo suffering with resentment. How do we mature and come to experience all things, including suffering, with joy? And perhaps the most astonishing part of the letter is the “Christ hymn” (Phil 2:6-11). This hymn, and the letter generally, let us in on something of God’s Way, and press us to know this Way as our Way and life. In this class, we’ll seek the astonishing life God invites us into through and in reading Philippians.

Who is the Church? (Doctrine)

Many of us have unresolved questions about the Church. Is being a member of a local church essential to being a follower of Jesus? Why is the Church an impediment for some in their Christian faith? How can we reconcile the Church’s failures with her many contributions? In this class, we will consider the Church’s identity and mission, while being sensitivity to the questions that people are asking in our contemporary context. We’ll also examine the practices that enable and sustain the Church in her identity and loving obedience to Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit. This class will draw from Scripture and various perspectives within the Christian tradition to demonstrate that the Church—the body of Christ—is crucial to God’s unfolding purposes in the world, both in her health and in her brokenness.

Life before God (Christian Living)

Christians are called to live all of their lives before God: to live in light of who God is, and to align their hearts and actions with God’s good purposes. In this course, we will take up the first half of the Lord’s prayer to consider God’s holiness, God’s reign, and becoming aligned with God’s will. We will also ask: what is the significance of Jesus’s prayer for us? How does it call us to mature faith? And what does it mean for the world? This is a course for those who long to be transformed by sharing in Christ’s life for the sake of the world.
