What do we mean by “Christian essentials”?
Evening School is a learning journey in Christian essentials—things that are foundational for Christian faith and living. In this, we’re not able to cover all of the essentials—for our three learning paths we’ve chosen nine classes that cover key aspects of Christian faith and living.
Can I register for just one evening?
Like any course of learning, Evening School classes are designed as run of three consecutive Wednesday evenings, and need full attendance. If it’s your first time and you’re wanting a taster, we encourage you to register for a class and come along to all three evenings.
Is this something I can bring my small group to?
Yes, absolutely. We have designed the school with small groups in mind. If you are part of a small group, we would encourage you to consider making the classes part of your year together.
Are the classes NZQA accredited?
No, they aren’t accredited.
Is there homework and are the classes assessed?
The classes don’t presume prior learning: they aim to stretch, grow and encourage you. Teachers may give exercises and readings between classes to strengthen your learning. While helpful, these are not compulsory and classes are not assessed.
How does the School compare with local church discipleship, and accredited theological study?
The Evening School meets a need for accessible learning that goes beyond what local churches can typically offer on Sundays, and which is not formal, accredited theological study. In this, we aim to serve local churches by helping their members to grow in Christian maturity and service. We also aim to serve other theological institutions by cultivating desire for further learning and encouraging participants to consider formal theological education.
Is Venn affiliated with a particular Christian denomination?
No, Venn is an ecumenical organisation. We’ve got good relationships with local Churches from a wide range of Christian denominations. This is reflected also in the backgrounds and lives of Venn staff, who worship at different churches.
Why is the School held at St Margaret’s Church in Hillsborough?
St Margaret’s is a great location, outside the city centre but within Central Auckland, with easy access to the southwestern motorway, free parking, and good facilities. St Margaret’s supports the vision of the School.
