Venn is honoured to host the CS ARTS archive.
CS ARTS magazine is the precious work of Chrysalis Seed Trust, an organisation that for many years sought to “equip artists to integrate their art and faith, and to reconcile art and faith communities.” The magazine has proved a valuable resource for scores of artists: it provided fascinating interviews, feature essays, and exhibition reviews, giving rare insights into the world of art-making and faith. The magazine showcased what Christian artists and spiritual seekers were doing in the contemporary arts community, as well as reveal how their personal faith impacted their lives and work.
CS ARTS began as a double-spread newsletter back in 2001; the inaugural print run was distributed to 200 supporters and artists. Over seven years, the well-considered and rather beautiful magazine developed into a 36-page print format. The final edition, produced in 2008, had a print run of 12,000. By this time, CS ARTS was reaching a diverse audience of practicing artists, art schools, high schools, contemporary galleries, and libraries across New Zealand and internationally.
Chrysalis Seed Trust was founded by Peter and Jessica Crothall. Peter and Jessica had a vision “to generate multiplying groups of artists in a subculture centred in Jesus.” The first steps in implementing this vision started in 1996, and over the subsequent years the vision was worked out in a variety of ways including artist groups and collectives, and the development of a nationwide network of artists of faith. Chrysalis Seed also developed a library of art and faith resources (now housed in the Hewitson Library, Knox College, Dunedin), facilitated seminars, organised an arts festival, and produced (among other publications) the poetry anthology With Our Eyes Open.
Constant in all this, and central to Chrysalis Seed’s work was CS ARTS magazine. It’s a vision we understand: at Venn’s Centre for the Arts we seek to create learning contexts and resources to help artists explore the arts as a vocation within the purposes of God. So we’re honoured to host the CS Archive, and to continue to extend its warm invitation to take art seriously as a matter of faith.
